Report of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants
In India, people have been using special plants as medicine for a very long time. Scientists have found that many of these plants have powerful properties that can help the body stay healthy. Some examples of these helpful plants are ginger, garlic, peppermint, and Artemisia annua. These plants have natural substances inside them that can fight germs, reduce pain, and even help with serious illnesses like cancer and diabetes.
All around the world, people use plants to help them feel better.
In India, people use these plants to treat common problems like stomachaches, colds, fevers, coughs, and joint pain. But these plants aren’t just for medicine—they are also used to make perfumes, beauty products, and even some foods. These plants can survive in very tough places, like super-hot or freezing cold weather. When the weather gets harsh, they create special chemicals to protect themselves, and these chemicals can also be helpful for people.
Many people around the world rely on plant-based medicine to take care of their health. In India alone, there are about 20,000 types of medicinal plants, and about 800 of them are used in treatments. Some modern medicines are made from these plants, and over 100 plant-based medicines are now used in hospitals and clinics.
Indian medical traditions like Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani use these plants to treat different illnesses. Scientists are still studying many plant families to find new medicines. Between 1950 and 1995, researchers discovered important medicines from plants, such as those that help with cancer and heart disease. One special plant, Rauwolfia serpentina, has been used to lower blood pressure, while another, Catharanthus roseus, has helped treat cancer.
Many of these plants are also used in health supplements because they are safe and affordable. They contain natural compounds that fight germs and protect the body. Some of these substances, called antioxidants, help keep our bodies strong by stopping harmful chemicals from damaging our cells.
Even today, plants play a big role in medicine. They help keep people healthy, create jobs for farmers and businesses, and provide affordable treatments for many diseases. In India, about 70% of modern medicines come from natural sources. Scientists continue to explore these plants to discover new and better ways to heal people in the future.
